HESA Doctoral Program Welcome

Doctoral HESA Program Welcome

Thank you for visiting the Indiana University Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) doctoral program website. The HESA community is excited that you are considering our programs! Below I highlight three points of pride that make our program unique.

The Faculty. With a deep understanding of the fields of higher education and student affairs as well as significant administrative, teaching, and research experience, HESA faculty members bring to their work inside and outside of the classroom the idea that theory and practice, research and administration, teaching and scholarship must inform one another. We have faculty specializing in teaching and learning, student development, student affairs, diversity and equity initiatives, faculty development, student engagement and success, and institutional research. Our faculty have and continue to serve in leadership roles in national organizations and as editors of top journals in our field.

The Center for Postsecondary Research. Among the largest and most productive Centers in the field of higher education, our Center for Postsecondary Research (CPR) is home to multiple projects, including the College + University Teaching Environment (CUTE), the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and its affiliated surveys, the National Institute for Transformation and Equity (NITE), and the Thriving in College: A National Study of LGBTQ+ Student Success. CPR projects have received funding from sources including: the College Board, the Lilly Endowment Inc., the Lumina Education Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Spencer Foundation, the Teagle Foundation, the Gates Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute for Educational Studies. The total revenue from CPR’s funded activities typically exceeds $3-4 million annually.

The Students and Alumni. HESA has a distinguished history of preparing faculty and administrators. We continue that legacy today. Students are active in presenting at national conferences and publishing research in peer-reviewed outlets. Alumni have gone forward to serve as leaders in our field, in both research and administration. They have served as leaders of national professional associations, foundations, and colleges and universities. These accomplishments are featured in the HESA Highlights

We wish you the best, hope you continue your investigation of our programs, and encourage you learn more about us through our Doctoral Virtual Visit. If you have questions about the IU HESA program, please send us an e-mail at hesa@iu.edu
