SoE Cares

SoE Cares

For us to succeed, the School of Education must cultivate an environment in which students, faculty, and staff feel safe, valued, and have a sense of belonging. We also must empower everyone to cultivate their own well-being and their community.

To achieve this we present activities, classes, services, and resources that demonstrate care for our community.

The Vision

The vision for SoE Cares aligns directly with the Universities strategic inclusion, wellness, and support goal:

  • Our school will be a space where every student, employee, and guest is included, matters, and belongs
  • School of Education community members will experience a supportive and empowering environment where activities and events prepare them for personal and professional enrichment, success, and advancement.
  • Resources and support will be easily accessible for all throughout their time in the School of Education

Wellbeing and Contemplation Room

The Wellbeing and Contemplation room (ED 2024) exists to provide a clean and calm place for you to maintain/regain your composure, be mindful, take the time find balance, contemplate on your situation and condition in or in-between classes, and to pray. The room remains open throughout the day as long as the Education Building is open.

The room is supported by School of Education Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion staff who may be reached between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout the fall and spring semesters.

If the door is open, feel free to come in.

If the door is closed, please consider that the room is in use by another student who is seeking solitude.

You may ask the staff in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, located in room 2002, for help identifying another space for you if the room is occupied. The Education Library maintains another Wellbeing and Contemplation space in the Education Building.

You will find:

  • open floor space for prayer
  • a whiteboard
  • comfortable seating for two
  • a table
  • a cabinet of additional supplies and materials for drawing, coloring, and making origami figures

Throughout the room you may notice we have placed table tents with QR codes that may direct your mobile device to online videos meant to help you center yourself and find peace—you will see links for chair yoga, breathings exercises, and a step-by-step guide for writing a haiku poem.

Some of the activities will have themes and change monthly.

There is seating and open floor space for you to contemplate, meditate, and pray.

The open floor space has a rug and available yoga mats, but you are free to bring your own floor mat if you prefer.

Students may come in to pray or meditate at any time. Anyone may use the room while someone is praying, we simply ask that one do so while being considerate of those in prayer or meditation.

For your contemplation and mental wellness, the Wellbeing and Contemplation room includes:

  • A weighted lap pad
  • A salt lamp
  • Sensory / fidget toys (i.e. Legos, fidget spinners and braids)
  • Coloring sheets
  • Origami paper (Japanese folding paper and guides for folding)
